The southern part of Iceland is especially rich in natural attractions and places associated with important historical events of the country. Here is the Hawk Valley with its famous geysers, waterfalls, glaciers, lakes, volcanoes, Fields Ting, Skalholt and more. The largest city in southern Iceland – Selfoss, with a population of just over 6,000 residents, is located in the heart Golfspiel mountain Ingolf. Here spent the winter of 873-874 years Arnarsson Ingolf, the first settler of Iceland, before finally settling in the “Bay of Smokes”, where Reykjavik now stands. In this place the river canyon of the hvita and SOG, fall into Alfuso, making it one of the fastest flowing rivers of Iceland. In his “book of Icelanders” Ari the Wise calls it the river “Beer waterfall”. The name of the town of Selfoss is translated as seal of the waterfall, although no waterfalls, no seal, no beer near there, and one of the most beautiful waterfalls of the same name with the town Selfoss is far away on the other side of the island.

In 1890, the town became famous thanks to the construction of this suspension bridge over the river Alfuso at quite daring for its time project. This bridge survived the earthquake in 1896, which destroyed almost the entire Selfoss, stood a massive RAID of German bombers in February 1941, but in 1944 was destroyed in the accident, but later restored by the U.S. military.
