Laguna is located in the southeastern part of Iceland, between the former Skaftafell national Park became in 2008 part of the natural Park of Vatnajökull, and the small harbour town of Höfn.

Glacial lake Jokulsarlon was formed by the melting of Vatnajökull glacier. Around the mid 30-ies of the glacier began to retreat rapidly from the Atlantic ocean, and the lake is constantly growing in size. From 1970 onwards, it was increased to four times its depth reaches 200 meters, which makes Jokulsarlon second deepest lake in Iceland, and the approximate area is 18 km2. Prior to the melting edge of the glacier Vatnajökull slid directly into the ocean.
