Ísafjörður, which means Ice fjord, is the largest city with a population of about 4,000 people, in the Westfjords. It is located on the northwestern shore of the fjord, almost at the very beginning. The entire coast of the Westfjords is indented with numerous fjords, and tourists arrive here on cruise ships admire this rare beauty. The name of the Peninsula translates as Western fjords.

The first settlers came to the present site of the city in the year 920. They arrived here with almost all the ancestors of the Icelanders, Norway. Later, in the 16th century, merchants from England and Germany set their factories here. When the Danish rulers of Iceland imposed a monopoly on trade, and the British with the Germans left these shores, the Icelanders were forced to develop the fisheries. In the 18th century there were established everywhere the processing and storage of fish and the welfare of local residents began to grow, built good houses, some of which have survived to our times. In 1866 Ísafjörður has received the city status.

In Ísafjörður there are all conditions for active rest. Among locals very popular, in addition to football, is swamp soccer. In 2010 and 2011, the city even hosted the European championship in this exotic game. But Golf lovers will not feel resentful. In 4 km from the town on 15 acres is surrounded by a lovely Golf course. You can still go kayaking and Canoeing.
