Kherson – regional center in the south of Ukraine, the administrative, industrial and cultural center of the Kherson region. Maritime and the largest port on the Dnieper river. Located on the right bank of the Dnieper River, near its confluence with the Dnieper estuary of the Black Sea.

Kherson was founded in 1778 by Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin, on the orders of Catherine the Great. The city was built under the supervision of General Ivan Gannibal on the site of a small fortress called Aleksanderschanz. The name Kherson is a contraction of Chersonesos, an ancient Greek colony founded approximately 2500 years ago in the southwestern part of Crimea. One of the first buildings in the Kherson Fort was the Church of St. Catherine where Potemkin was eventually buried.

The last tarpan was caught near Kherson in 1866.[citation needed] During World War II, Kherson was occupied by the German Army from 21 August 1941 to 13 March 1944. During the Ukainian revolution of 2014 the city whas the scene of riots against president Yanukovich during which the main Lenin statue of the city was toppled by protesters. After the revolution the city became relatively calm.

Stryi – a city in Ukraine, the center of Stryi district, Lviv region, one of the main and the largest transport hubs in Western Ukraine, an important economic and cultural center of the Lviv region. The city is located on the left bank of the river Stryi.

Most likely the city got its name from the name of the river Stryi, one of the tributaries of Dniester. Obviously, the name of the river is older than the city that was founded later.

Stryi was mentioned for the first time in 1385. Already then its territory was incorporated in the Kingdom of Poland after the decline of Ruthenian Kingdom. In 1387 the Polish king Jogaila gave the city as the present to his pro-Tsarist brother Švitrigaila.

In 1431 it was given the Magdeburg Rights, and it was located in the Ruthenian Voivodeship, which from the 14th century until 1772 was a part of Poland. The city was governed by the local magistrate headed by a burgomaster.

Severodonetsk – a city of regional subordination in the Luhansk region of Ukraine, the largest industrial center of Donbass.

Severodonetsk was founded in 1934 in connection with the construction of nitrogen fertilizer plant. In 1951 he received the status of a city. In 1970 crossed the 100,000th mark population.

Severodonetsk located in the eastern part of Ukraine in the west of the Lugansk region on the left bank of the Seversky Donets River, sand dunes and river soils. The area in the city and around it – flat with slight elevations (50-80 m above sea level). Around Severodonetsk grow riparian forests on alluvial soils, rugged numerous oxbows Seversky Donets (lakes claw, Svinarnoe (Kryven’ka) Zimovnoe, Sandy, Tuba, Bobrova et al.). In the spring on the Seversky Donets seen flooding with the raising of the water level from 2 to 8 m with flooding suburban areas. The city is located in the steppe zone.
